The sun is shining so many of you will be planning your Caravan or Motorhome holiday to make the most of this lovely Britishweather. Therefore, we thought we’d send you a few tips on things to prepare your caravan for the summer.

Before embarking on your first journey, make sure you get your Caravan or Motorhome fully serviced. The service will not only include the running gear, brakes and lights but the habitation side like the water, gas, electrical and heating systems. The National Caravan Council (NCC) have a list of approved workshops on their website.

It is always necessary to do a few safety checks of your own before you start using your caravan for the summer.

  • Check the condition of your tow bar, and lubricate if necessary. Connect your 12N and 12S plugs and check all of the lights, including brake and indicator lights, and 12v appliances are all working.
  • Check all of your tyres pressure, also check tread depth and for cracking. It is worth checking that the wheel nuts on the wheels are tight.
  • Couple up a gas cylinder and check all the appliances are working, the last thing you want is to find out when starving hungry on your first night.
  • If you have an awning, check there is no damage or parts missing.
  • The battery should have been removed and charged over the winter. Put it back in, check level of electrolyte fluid and top up with de-ionised water if needed.
  • Run a sterilising solution through the water pipes and your water system. Replace your water filter after sterilising the water system.
  • Make sure you have caravan insurance or motorhome insurance in place.

The exterior of your Caravan or Motorhome is probably in need of a good spring clean before taking it out on the road. Simply use soapy water and nylon tights, the nylon mesh is abrasive enough to get rid of sun baked dirt and flies without damaging the paintwork. It is also worth using a protective polish or wax, so it looks lovely and shiny throughout the summer. Always carry spares that you might not think of, bungee cords, cutlery, crockery, blankets. Even if you don’t need them, one of your neighbours might do and sharing and helping is what caravanning holidays are all about. If you haven’t already, subscribe to a good magazine or owners club to find a site that will meet all of your requirements. If you become a member of a club, you can often get discounted rates on your insurance. Take lots of things to keep children occupied if you have them, cards, games and portable DVD players go down a treat. We hope our top tips help you to enjoy your caravanning this summer!
