New York Health Insurance: Getting More Expensive

New York health insurance quotes have increased dramatically in the last year since there are less health insurance companies competing for business in the New York area.  The article “Health Care Prices in New York City Skyrocket, Residents Anxious for Obamacare Policy to Kick In” by Kenneth Lovett from the Daily News Albany discusses some of the nervous feelings residents feel as they struggle to pay for individual health insurance.

Europe on drought alert

Lloyd’s is warning that alarm bells are already ringing across Europe over the potential for widespread water shortages.

According to Lloyd’s, 2011 is shaping up to be seriously dry, with officials having already raised concerns in Switzerland, The Netherlands and France, while parts of the UK have seen the driest Spring in more than a century.

In addition to the agricultural sector, water shortages can have serious implications for the energy sector, with the hydropower sector vulnerable to problems and non-hydro power plants in need water for cooling.

High Deductible Plans Increasingly Popular

A recent survey found that high-deductible insurance plans have seen a major increase in popularity. According to America’s Health Insurance Plans, in 2007 just 4.5 million people had these types of plans. In 2010, that number more than doubled and ten million people had signed up for high-deductible insurance plans. These types of plans have lower premiums but higher deductibles.

High deductibles usually mean a maximum of $3,000 for individuals and $6,000 for families. Opting for a plan like this can save people about $85 to $100 a month on their premiums. “

New Jersey health insurance is undergoing a Medicaid overhaul which may affect thousands of residents.  According to the article “NY Health Officials Unveil Medicaid Overhaul” by Josh Lederman on Forbes.com, residents can expect to see some big changes to their Medicaid health plans.

Class Action Suit Brought Against USAA

Daniel Gatti, a Salem, Ore., lawyer filed a class action suit on behalf of four plaintiffs against USAA, claiming the insurer implemented “an undisclosed cost containment scheme which wrongfully deprives U.S. military servicemen, women, and their families, of insurance benefits for medical treatment.”
